Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee or just IIT Roorkee was earlier known as the University of Roorkee and Thomason College of Civil Engineering. It is a public engineering university situated in the beautiful area of Roorkee, Uttrakhand, India. Established by British India in 1847 by the then lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, it was since given its now held university status in 1949 and was converted into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) to be made into “Institute of nation’s importance” in 2001, thus becoming the nation’s seventh IIT to be created. The institute originally started its classes in 1845 to educate local youth about engineering and make them be able to assist in public works.

IIT Roorkee has 21 divergent academic departments that covers subjects such as Humanities, Applied Sciences, Engineering & Social Sciences and Management programs with a strong prominence on technological and scientific education and research. The School of Paper Technology established by the Government of India was subsequently renamed as the Department of Paper Technology in July 1992.

Campus Details

The main campus of Roorkee is spread over an area of 365 acres (1,480,000 m2).IIT Roorkee has a campus of 25 acres (100,000 m2) in Saharanpur which provides courses in Paper Technology & Packaging Technology, Polymer Science, and Process Engineering. Furthermore, a brand-new ten-acre campus has been established in Greater Noida, Knowledge Park II, which was established on 4 April 2011. The Noida campus has in total 16 lecture rooms, faculty offices, software laboratories, a library, and a computer center. Most of the students live in the student hostels, where the academic routine is complimented by the extra-curricular activities. The campus has in total 16 hostels, of which two are occupied by girls.

College Ranking

IIT Roorkee was among only three IITs to be featured in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2012-13, the latest league table of the world’s top 400 universities. As per the very recent study conducted by NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) 2018 to rank Indian institutes based on their merits the report has found that, IIT Roorkee is the 6th best Engineering Institution in India with a score of 72.57, which is left behind by IIT Madras (88.95), IIT Bombay (84.82), IIT Delhi (82.18), IIT Kharagpur (77.78), IIT Kanpur (75.24) in the top 5 ranks.

Research Work

Research activities in IIT Roorkee are conducted at both/either the department level or under the specially formed central office for Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy (SRIC). Major research funding has been awarded by several ministries and departments of the Government of India, including the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (India), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and others over time. The Uttrakhand government has also set up the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Dehradun. They are currently planning to link data centre of an earthquake early warning system developed by IIT Roorkee with the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Dehradun which would come as a great recognition for the establishment.

Major funding has been given to ensure its participation in various projects initiated by different Ministries of Government of India like Environment & Forest, Surface Transportation,  Communication and Information Technology, Non-Conventional Energy Sources, Human Resource Development, Biotechnology, Atomic Energy and Science and
Technology. Some major projects that they have been involved in are:

  • Seismological Network around Tehri Region

Development of multi-tier cell based bioassays for high throughput screening and study the molecular mechanism of action of endocrine disrupting chemicals from industrial wastes.

  • Special Manpower Development Programme for VLSI Design and Related Software

Development of Technology Packages and Simulation Model for Prediction of Plants Performance based on Evaluation of the Plants already Established in the Field.

  • Design and development of super hard graded Nano- -composite coatings for industrial applications & Functional Nano- -composite ceramic coatings: Fabrication, characterization & applications.
  • Analysis and Simulation of Beam-Wave interaction and Design of specific modules for the design and development of a 42 GHz, 200 kW, CW Gyrotron.

Cultural Fest

Students conduct three fests every year, Cognizance (Technical festival), Thomso (Cultural festival) and Sangram (Sports festival).

Cognizance

It is the annual technical festival of IIT Roorkee and is held in the month of March. Though younger than most of its counterparts, Cognizance has improved in leaps and bounds to become one of the biggest technical events of the country. It is the largest of its kind in North India with over 16 million web hits from 100,000 unique visitors from over a 100 different countries and participants of over 15,000 students and professionals across India. Aimed at providing a platform for showcasing the best and the latest innovations in the world of technology, the event also boasts of a plethora of lectures by some of the biggest names in the field. Entirely managed by students, Cognizance provides opportunities for the aspiring scientists, executives and managers alike. The prize money for these events exceeds 20 Lakhs.

Thomso

It is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. It is held in the month of October over a period of three days. The Uttrakhand government has proclaimed it as the “Premier Youth Festival” of the Indian state of Uttarakhand over its gargantuan scale of participation. In its 34th edition in 2016, it witnessed a record footfall of about 40,000 participants, making it the largest cultural fest of Northern India. Started back in 1982 by the students of IIT Roorkee, it plays host to a multitude of talented scholars and media moguls in an annual celebration of culture and intellect.

Sangram

It is the annual sports festival organized by IT Roorkee and is held over four days. There are over 20 different sports being competed with around 1500 student participating in it. They are mostly from IITs and NITs from across India and is devoted to being a customized event to be a good stage for talent showcasing.

Alumni Speak

The IIT Roorkee Alumni Association was established and registered in 1940 as a society under the Society Registration Act. The association has 31 local chapters in the country and three chapters abroad. The association encourages the alumni to take interest in the activities of the alma mater and promotes relations between alumni.

The association hosts every year the Diamond, Golden and Silver jubilee functions, where alumni graduating from past 60, 50 and 25 years are invited. Since 2005 it has also been awarding the Distinguished Alumni Award to alumni who have contributed immensely in the fields of Social Sciences, Academic/Research, Engineering Corporate Development/Entrepreneurship & Public Administration and Service to the Society.

Also the Student Alumni Mentorship Programme has been initiated by the association to help young students to achieve their career aspirations. The alumni regularly visit the institute to interact with the students and staff and share their suggestions.

Prateek Jha: A college campus is supposed to be an integration of everything that is required to build a student as a person, piece by piece. The growth is a forever increasing graph although the slope varies from a person to another. With that remark, IIT Roorkee accomplishes every aspect that is desired from it. A campus thriving with so much eagerness and fun along with determination is enough to seal the deal for anyone.
